This Weeks Points Lesson

A couple of newsletters ago, I said to stay airport-agnostic when booking with points. There’s one more place to ditch loyalty: the airline itself. This week’s points lesson: if you have transferable points (Amex/Chase/Citi/CapOne/Bilt), be airline-agnostic when you book. The exact same seat can be priced wildly differently through partners.

Before you move a single point, price the flight with the operating carrier and at least two partners (e.g., United vs. Aeroplan vs. LifeMiles; American vs. BA/Iberia Avios). Compare miles + taxes/fees, then transfer only to the cheapest option. Loving a brand is fine—paying extra points for it isn’t.
